My children love to play outside, and I for one am very happy for it. The more exercise and activity they want to do during the day, the better they sleep at night. But I used to have problems with their laundry. That is, I tried to clean their pants and sweatshirts after they wore them one time. That quickly proved to be too much for both me and the washer and dryer, so as a backup I wanted to wash their clothes every few days.
Here’s the system I set up to make sure they would always have their clothes available and waiting for them to put on and wear. I did a little remodeling in the back of the house, and had some mudroom lockers installed by the back door. These lockers are designed both wider and deeper than your traditional lockers, and so are great at keeping bulky winter clothing, coats, sweaters, and sweatpants. I had a couple extra hooks installed as well, to make sure there was definitely enough space in the locker.
They also needed a place to keep their hat and gloves. At first I just had them put them in the bottom of the locker, but all too often they ended up on the floor. So I went to the garage and got some old freezer baskets to set in the locker. These wire baskets were shallow and wide, perfect for keeping everything from spilling out of the locker, and they fit the lockers perfectly. They look like they were built for it.
So now I have the setup I was looking for. It keeps their dirty clothes away from the clean stuff in their bedrooms, and even better, the whole system works without me standing over them. It’s as easy as it could possibly be, which is something I very highly recommend when it comes to children.
